Nuclear Canister Closure Welding

In May of 2002, Amer Industrial Technologies, Inc. was awarded the contract for the Multi Canister Overpack (MCO) Closure Welding Project by Fluor Hanford. The project included the engineering and design of manipulation devices necessary for the lifting and placing of the final Cover Cap Assembly (CCA), the modification and engineering of the MCO Welding Hood apparatus, quality control/ assurance of the welding, non-destructive examination of the welds, the actual welding, and n-stamping of each individual MCO with AIT’s “N” Stamp certification. The scope of the project was done in two phases. The first phase developed all of the procedures and equipment necessary to perform the project. The second phase was the actual welding, qualification, certification, testing and stamping of each of the 418 MCOs. AIT looks forward to bringing our success and experience to your projects.

AIT was required to construct a full scale mock-up of the MCO Weld Pit for the Factory Acceptance Test of the MCO Welding Project. All of AIT’s Engineering, Design, Equipment and Procedures were put to the test before welding was initiated.

The MCO Welding Hood was designed to evacuate all of the welding gases from the welding area. You can see the MCO Mock-Up, with an automatic welding machine that can be covered by the Welding Hood apparatus.

This picture shows a welder performing remote welding with automatic orbital welding equipment. The machine has two (2) video cameras, fore and aft, that are used by welders to position the weld head for correct weld deposition. The cameras also record every weld performed by Amer Industrial Technologies, Inc.

The final weld performed on the MCOs is the manual Helium Leak Test Plug Weld. This is the final step before “N” Stamping an MCO.

The Helium Leak Test Apparatus shown above is used to test Amer Industrial Technologies weld integrity. The test is conducted to detect Helium at 1 x 10 -9. AIT tests the MCO for He leakage with an acceptance rate of 10 (-7). We test at 10 (-9) but acceptance is 10 (-7).
